REACH

European Union (EU) regulatory system for chemicals

REACH was adopted by the European Parliament and ratified by the European Council in December 2006. The regulatory system came into force on 1 June 2007 and involves the registration of approximately 30,000 existing chemicals. Pre-registration commenced in 2008 and full registration is expected by 2018.

REACH stands for the:

  • Registration
  • Evaluation
  • Authorisation of Chemicals
The new regulation replaces numerous existing European Union Directives and regulations and places responsibility on the chemical industry to demonstrate the safety of its products.

The European Commission believes REACH will deliver significant benefits by:
  • providing a high level of protection to human health and the environment
  • fostering innovation within the EU chemicals industry and ensuring high safety standards for its products
  • providing a single EU regulatory system with a streamlined decision making process and clear timelines
