The challenge

Rainham School Before

Located in Gillingham, Kent, Rainham School for girls has an excellent reputation for providing its pupils with the highest standard of education. Rainham School educates over 1,500 girls from the local area and is dedicated to providing the children with a safe and happy learning environment, which allows them to reach their full potential.

In early 2017, the 1,576m² flat roof to the main school building started to show signs that the existing roof had reached the end of life. The roof featured a felt and asphalt waterproofing system that was beginning to allow water to ingress. If allowed to continue the water could potentially cause structural damage to the building and pose a health and safety risk to the school, the pupils and staff.

Triflex were brought to the attention of the Multi Academy Trust (MAT) who operate the property through their project manager Ridge & Partners LLP. Triflex has provided waterproofing solutions to other schools within the trust, so both client and consultant were familiar with the benefits of Triflex systems. Triflex were specified for other projects within the trust due to all waterproofing and surfacing systems being totally cold applied. Using a cold liquid applied waterproofing system reduces the risk to the building, students and staff during installation.

The solution

Rainham School After

Following a thorough site investigation, the Triflex Technical Team outlined the main challenges being the upstand height and low windows of the building. The specification determined that the Triflex ProTect warm roof system would provide the most effective solution due to its exceptional resistance to standing water and its long-term durability. By installing a warm roof system, the building would also meet the requirements of Part L2B of The Building Regulations.

Triflex ProDetail was also specified to waterproof all upstands, rooflight kerbs, penetrations and perimeter edge details. Triflex ProDetail makes easy work of all detailed areas and like Triflex ProTect, it is rainproof within 30 minutes and is able to withstand stress after 2 hours allowing the contractor to maximise the weather windows.

The Triflex systems were installed by Makers Construction Limited, a Triflex Authorised Contractor who are more than familiar with both seamless systems. The rapid cure time and single process application of the Triflex, allowed Makers to prioritise roof areas that needed to be waterproofed quickly and within a short timeframe.

The combination of excellent time management from Makers Construction Limited and the exceptionally fast cure times of the PMMA (PolyMethyl MethAcrylate) resin-based systems, meant that works were carried out efficiently and effectively, during school time while meeting all deadlines.
